Easy Living

Sonny Rollins

The best of the studio discs Rollins cut in the ’70s, Easy Living opens with him putting the bellows to a well-known standard once again, but this time the cover is a contemporary pop tune, Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely,” getting jolted and elasticized. The other highlight is Sonny on soprano, tearing through “Arroz Con Pollo” with such panache and pace that you wish he picked up the straight horn more often. Drummer Tony Williams and conguero Bill Summers are the A-List percussionists providing the rhythmic pyrotechnics, and George Duke is on the keyboards.
