As a "freelancing" court musician, 18th-century composer Domenico Scarlatti wrote over 500 sonatas for the keyboard. The majority remained unpublished for many years, languishing in various royal collections. Because of this isolation, we tend to downplay Scarlatti's historical relevance, but his sonatas show undeniable brilliance in their witty, refreshing turns of harmony. Naxos has pursued the noble goal of releasing all 500 Scarlatti sonatas; participating keyboardists include Eteri Andjaparidze, whose playing is notable for its buoyant sparkle.
