Tremendous technique and feeling that can’t be denied.

This Brit-blues-era Fleetwood Mac singer/guitarist threw it all away to join a cult, spending the bulk of 35 years in the musical wilderness. The mostly-purist set opens tentatively, but by the time the slide whiz eases into his hero Elmore James'eloquent “It Hurts Me Too,” Spencer and his Norwegian (!) blues band have found their pocket. That pocket may be more relaxed than some prefer, and while it's clear that Spencer's spirituality and love of blues are inextricably linked, he sometimes gets a tad preachy. But his tremendous technique and feeling can't be denied.
