Mutant Disco Volume #2

Various Artists
Further adventures in the nebulous region between punk and disco.

Packaged overseas in 2003 as the second disc of a double-CD set, Mutant Disco Volume 2 features ZE's biggest New Wave hit, 1982's classic "I Know What Boys Like" by the Waitresses, a Kent, Ohio sextet that included ex-Television drummer Billy Ficca. That single was the highest profile representation of the early '80s flowering of groups like the Au Pairs, the Bush Tetras and Romeo Void in which a female singer would sneer at the stupid, susceptible nature of the male sex in bored tones over scratchy guitars and itchy dance-rock beats. The bit in "Boys" where vocalist Patty Donahue professes to apologize for being such a sadistic pussy-whipper but then calls her boy toy a sucker and cackles in overdubbed disdain should be played on a continuous loop in hell for every producer and manager behind fake flirts like the Pussycat Dolls.
