Mountain Passages, a set of Dave Douglas originals on his own Greenleaf imprint, reunites the New York trumpeter with his initial Dutch contact Michael Moore, and shows how deeply compatible their melodic conceptions and ability to plumb emotional depths remains. Douglas and Moore appear in a splendid quintet with two of Canada's finest, drummer (and Bennink fan) Dylan van der Schyff and cellist Peggy Lee, all supercharged by New York tuba titan Marcus Rojas. Mountain Passages was inspired by a gig Douglas had played at 9,000 feet in Italy's Dolomite range, and the ensuing album takes you even higher.
