Raw and nervy takes on Mogwai’s classic worked-over studio crafted tunes.

As with Stereolab, Mogwai were often referred to as "post-rock," given their preference for guitars that provided textures more than riffs; and as with Stereolab, Mogwai are the kind of band whose albums demonstrate incremental progress — in short, the kind that compiles well. Government Commissions covers eight years in the band's career, with a nearly even assortment from their albums, all recorded live in the studio for BBC DJs John Peel and Steve Lamacq. Here, the band's sandblaster guitars take on a raw, nervy force different from — but equal to — their worked-over studio takes, particularly in the epic reworking of "Like Herod."
