Alina Simone has been busy. On the very same day her debut essay collection You Must Go and Win was published by Faber & Faber, the singer-songwriter also released her third album. Much like her music, the book is a love letter to her Russian heritage (her family immigrated to America when she was a toddler). It’s also a hilarious account of trying to make it in the fickle, often unglamorous world of indie rock. If the book is a witty testament to the struggles of making music, then how wonderful that the music itself remains raw and emotional. Simone’s voice is as gripping as ever, able to evoke pathos and wonder in equal turns.
