A mid-’80s comeback

A still-on-the-way-up Stevie Ray Vaughan produced this fabled roadhouse rocker’s mid-’80s comeback, and joined him on guitar for half the tracks. But mostly, he deferred to his mentor, playing rhythm and generally keeping out of the way except on “Double Whammy aka Wham,” his favorite Mack oldie, on which the two muscular guitarists exchange sizzling choruses while draining their whammy bars. Lonnie plays as fast (and powerfully) as the album title suggests, his Flying V guitar dripping vibrato throughout, and sings like a choirboy enduring a world of pain.
