Only a state full of underdogs like New Jersey could have birthed a band as unique and enduring as Lifetime. Their secret weapon was Ari Katz’s vocals, so recognizable that he helped the act maintain a level of cohesion despite their own musical evolution over the years. Part melodic rock and part punk, with a healthy dose of hardcore, the band may never have sobbed onstage, but instantly memorable songs like the determinedly chugging “Rodeo Clown” undeniably influenced Jersey bands like Saves the Day and Thursday who continued to walk the sonic tightrope between melody and aggression. Albeit in much tighter pants.
