Could offbeat music from the English Channel island of Guernsey possibly be required listening? Yes, if it's a performance as enchanting as this one, which features superb performances by baritone Paul Hillier and the very fine Harp Consort directed by Andrew Lawrence-King, himself a Guernsey native. Subtitled "Ancient Songs from a Small Island" and sung in a French dialect (since Guernsey is far closer to Normandy and Brittany than to England), the album encompasses an earthy array of songs that wander thematically from tales of travel to lullabies to dance tunes and beyond.
