In The Moment

A married Mormon based in San Francisco, Ryan Raddon isn't exactly the usual house music success story, but his music isn't typical either. Producer, DJ and A&R man at Om Records, Raddon's second album under the Kaskade moniker remains true to house's underground roots while sounding thoroughly accessible, even pop. It's as if Raddon picked up where Everything But the Girl left off several years ago and took its folk-soul to a place akin to where Ben Watt of that duo has gone with his Buzzin 'Fly club nights and DJ-mixed CDs, employing sophisticated arrangements that integrate house's steady pulse with acoustic guitars, real violins and live drummers. Although nine different vocalists appear on these 13 tracks, the album's silky consistency bespeaks Raddon's light, nuanced touch. The guitar-stroked opener "Steppin 'Out" is one of several standout cuts that give house a reason to keep its doors open.
