Where most trip-hop takes its jazz influence from West Coast cool or Blue Note hard bop, Berlin collective Jazzanova relishes the sound of early '70s fusion. With tricky extended chords and keyboard runs Chick Corea might dig (check the solo flight on "Hanazono"), Jazzanova differentiates itself from its sample-oriented peers with tracks that develop, occasionally to the point of meandering. But when they cast aside the more complex strains for the simple rhythmic pleasures of "Glow & Glare" they're just as accomplished.
