Cage: Early Piano Music

Herbert Henck

There’s no efficient way to collect all of Cage’s early piano music in one set; if you get into this period, you’re going to hear different takes – which is a good thing. The trademark, resonant-but-icy ECM house engineering of Henck’s playing fits some of these pieces gloriously: especially the long-take version of the hummable, lovely “In A Landscape,” a highlight of the set. “The Seasons” in its piano version is another standout selection from this piano survey, in which there are no “prepared piano” pieces in sight.
