The latest effort from alt-country's most prodigious mainstay, Gold Brick finds Langford delivering a set of simmering songs that fuse the better elements of country and rock. "All Roads Lead Back to Me" is sewn up in silvery Soft Boys guitars, the cover of Procol Harum's "Salty Dog", with its rushing chamber strings and dramatic piano is a moody set piece that recalls recent vintage Elvis Costello. Langford's voice has taken on an aged, leathery quality, and his impassioned renderings of these songs gives added urgency to his always searching lyrics.
