A trio comprised of West African guitarist Lionel Loueke, Hungarian drummer Ferenc Nemeth and Swedish/Italian bassist Massimo Biolcati, Gilfema is as diverse and as far-reaching as that lineage suggests. Though clearly based in jazz, Gilfema isn't afraid to tug at its corners, making music that is restless and riveting. "Lost Magic" is as mystical as the title suggests, pairing a groaning bass with fluttering percussion and eerie, off-kilter harmonies. "Akwe" is rigid and percussive, Louke's brittle guitar snapping out a brisk and steady rhythm. Gilfema is the perfect example of music without borders, songs informed by different cultures and characters. Warm and rewarding.
