Unlike the sad-sacked alt-country that has become all too pervasive, the Waco Brothers are more of an urban honky-tonk band, their raucousness far from their peers 'honeysuckle sighs. Aside from the slight Brit twinge that accents frontman (and Mekon) Jon Langford's spiteful spits, the Wacos wouldn't sound out of place alongside commercial country's Toby, Tim and Trace in a police lineup — like CMT's holy trinity, Langford is boisterous and confident, a shit-kicker supreme. Freedom and Weep, their excellent seventh album, hardly rocks the boat, but it will definitely rock the stereo.
