A Brooklyn-born, New York-based singer-songwriter who favors soft lilts over challenging melodies, Debbie Deane makes clear on this, her debut album, what it is that she likes about music: Carole King's open heart, Nanci Griffith's quiet confidence and Joni Mitchell's inquisitive mind. Obviously Deane is not entirely successful at channeling those landmarks — who could be? — but her elastic folk songs absolutely define her musical identity.
