Clifford Brown And Max Roach At Basin Street

Max Roach
The last group where Rollins wasn’t the main attraction

There is no question that the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet was the best working ensemble relationship Sonny Rollins experienced before (and briefly at the same time as) he went out under his own name, and it was arguably the last group where he wasn’t the main attraction. At Basin Street reflects this pecking order. Rollins occasionally dazzles with quicksilver passages, as on “I’ll Remember April,” but it is his contemporary Brown, a trumpeter with a clarion voice in both tone and conception, and Roach, a drummer who blends the crowd-pleasing swing gusto of Gene Krupa with the bop architecture of a Kenny Clarke, who get the most space, and utilize it to great advantage.
