The first in a planned trio of albums, The Bluegrass Diaries is the sound of Jim Lauderdale once again exploring every nook and cranny that bluegrass has to offer. The playing is excellent (especially on the fast-paced closer "Ain't No Way to Run"), the songwriting is impeccable ("It's Such a Long Journey Home" is among the saddest tracks the genre has yet produced) and Lauderdale's voice is again the sort of tenor that melts your heart, one confession at a time. Like 2006's Bluegrass, this should get him nominated for a Grammy. This time, though, it's hard to see who will beat him out.
