"Today is your birthday, but it might be the last day of your life," goes the latest single by Florida group Cruxshadows. Dismal thinking, indeed, but for Cruxshadows even allowing for the possibility of candles and cake is a kind of hopefulness. Since 1992, the group has trafficked in shadows, making blue-light dance music perfect for late nights in the catacombs. Their songs filter the steady pulse of electro through cobwebs and sackcloth, vocalist Rogue intoning grim sentiment — and, occasionally, words of comfort — over the skittering rhythms. A perfect marriage of sadness and synths.
