With the Grey, it's the fifth listen that gets you. Sure, the Canadian band's melodic rock is immediately accessible, but it's on those repeated listens that the group's complexity begins to unfold before your ears. Counter-melodies shift into focus, drum fills begin to happen into slow motion and the bass turns hypnotic. Most importantly, the slightly off-kilter anthems begin to take root in the way that the best post-hardcore (Fugazi, Drive Like Jehu, Engine Down) often does. So listen. And listen again. Asleep at the Wheel is a drive worth taking more than once.
