Despite forming the band in New York, Chief sticks to their Los Angeles roots

Though Chief's musical roots are in New York — the quartet started making music together while students at NYU — it's their hometown of Los Angeles that comes through most in their debut LP, Modern Rituals. The album's 11 tracks are teeming with sunny, reverb-heavy guitar and breezy harmonies, along with occasional mentions of the shore and their city. In "This Land," frontman Evan Koga sings, "This land is ripe for the pickin'/ I'd rather be deep inside of it," while album closer "Night & Day" is founded on lush harmonies and layered, jangly guitars.
