A Band Of Gypsies

Les Yeux Noirs

This young group connects the dots from around the Balkans, from the Romanian "Danse Romaine" to a Jewish "Fraylekh," stopping at all points in between (and beyond — "Drogonei Dalneyou" will be familiar to some as Mary Hopkin's 1968 hit "Those Were the Days"). The massed violins sound positively orchestral at times, although the pyrotechnic playing quickly dispels any classical ideas. Brooding material like "Les Deux Oiseaux" works well in the thicker textures the band offers, but the musicianship is stunning on everything.
