A pop genius who was ahead of his time has bestowed his royal seal of approval on a rapper whose moment, we hope, is still only just beginning. Yesterday, Prince released two new albums, ART OFFICIAL AGE and PLECTRUMELECTRUM, and he marked the occasion with a live-streaming event that included a concert at his Paisley Park estate. Kendrick Lamar made an unannounced appearance, joining the Purple Rain legend onstage for “What’s My Name,” from 1998 rarities box set Crystal Ball. Lamar added new lyrics to a rendition of the song by Prince’s current band, 3rdeyegirl, that had some of the frenzied, rootsy qualities of the good kid, m.A.A.d. city mastermind’s own new single, “i.”

Watch a brief clip below (via Pitchfork), or click here to sit through a lengthy replay of the entire live-stream — “Breakfast Can Wait,” and, in the absence of a fast-forward option, the rest of us will have to, too.

In other Prince-related developments, he held a fan live Q&A yesterday, and he so far has given only one esoteric, link-based answer.
