The history of bands recording full soundtracks to motion pictures is long and storied, but the history of bands recording soundtracks to films they made is decidedly less-so. That’s one of the many things that makes The Treasure Fleet’s soundtrack for The Sun Machine so remarkable. Not only did they record the songs — whiz-band high gloss music that pulls equally from glam and power pop — but they made the movie it accompanies, too, a delirious sci-fi epic in which the band is recruited by a mysterious figure named Mye to do his bidding. But even without seeing the film, there’s enough high harmonies and indelible melodies in the soundtrack that it stands on its own as a potent blast of high-sheen rock and roll.
