The fourth album from New Jersey grinders Black Wine is called Yell Boss, and just a few seconds of its first single “Rime” is proof that it’s aptly named. The song is a blast of groaning, grinding guitar, topped by the bug-eyed, desperate holler of frontman Jeff Schroeck. There’s some of the primal howl of Jesus Lizard and the sledgehammer-to-the-gut wallop of Big Black, and the song pitches and heaves a ship tossed on dark seas. So much more appropriate, then, that its lyrics are a sly cribbing of “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” (“Trade my cross/ for an albatross” goes one particularly harrowing moment. Its bleak message is perfectly suited to Black Wine’s stormy post-hardcore.
