Here’s what happens when the hype cycle hits a hardcore band like Perfect Pussy: When they hop on stage and tear through their entire discography in 20 minutes, most people don’t know how to react. Unlike the delicate slam dancing that accompanies, say, a Ty Segall show, tracks like “Driver” and “Dig” tap a deep, primal urge to plow into one’s surroundings like the snow trucks that pace up and down these streets. That doesn’t mean cold-cocking your neighbor with a beer bottle, but it does mean losing yourself in a sea of bodies and communal bitterness. A good portion of the Baby’s All Right crowd simply looked confused. Maybe it’s because this wasn’t Perfect Pussy’s show; it was a de facto release party for Total Slacker, a local favorite that’s built a cult following on the strength of straight-up rock songs. Or in the case of their Slip Away album, shards of rose-tinted shoegaze riffs—a cathartic cleansing on par with Perfect Pussy, just a little less tantrum-y.
