As our editor wrote in his wrap-up earlier today, Wednesday night at South by Southwest ended on a dark, disorienting note. As we left Damon Albarn’s downcast set at NPR’s showcase, the mood outside matched his dystopian solo music, with the next street up cordoned off by police tape and a line of festival volunteers keeping onlookers away from a crime scene that left two dead and 23 injured.
“Show isn’t happening,” Tyler, the Creator wrote on Twitter, referring to his headlining slot at the Mohawk, which was cancelled due to the fatal car accident that happened outside its doors. “Something sad happened. I’m bummed.”
Those words stood in stark contrast to the Odd Future frontman’s disposition earlier in the day, which fell more into the role of fanboy as he looked on — and even stage-dived from — the vicious Trash Talk performance at Scoot Inn. Thanks to the antagonistic antics of singer Lee Spielman, who told security to leave the stage and encouraged everyone else to charge it, it teetered on the edge of absolute chaos but the crowd controlled itself enough to keep a raucous hardcore show from turning into a violent one.
Check out shots of Spielman leaping toward our camera in the slideshow above, as well as standout shots from Black Lips, St. Vincent, the Eagulls, Kelis, Perfect Pussy and a patio-owning Destruction Unit.
