While his friend and label-mate was impressing the world with both his craft and his humility on The Colbert Report last night, Schoolboy Q was headlining a sold-out show at the Observatory in Santa Ana, fending off questions from fans asking, “Where’s that Grammy, School?”
“I never in my life thought I’d be a rapper,” he answered, “and never thought I would sell out a show. I never thought I’d put out an album that anyone would care about, and now, I never thought I’d be nominated for two Grammys, and it’s all because of you guys and your support.”
From there the show covered the rowdy, exuberant ground that fans hope for and expect, opening with “Gangsta” and “Hands on the Wheel” and working his way to a huge “Man of the Year,” the South Central native was all smiles and humility, much like Kendrick Lamar during his Colbert interview. The new faces of West Coast hip-hop couldn’t be having more fun.
