Paul McCartney‘s songs have been covered many times in the past 50 years, but now the Beatles co-founder is in line for an unusual tribute compilation. The Art of McCartney includes covers of Sir Paul’s songbook by an unpredictable mix of artists, from fellow songwriting icons Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, B.B. King, Smokey Robinson and Willie Nelson to newer acts such as Owl City and Airborne Toxic Event.

According to Rolling Stone, the project has been in the works since 2003, when Ralph Sall, who has produced McCartney, came up with the idea. Sall started recording songs with McCartney’s backing band (Rusty Anderson and Brian Ray on guitarist, Paul “Wix” Wickens on keyboards and Abe Laboriel, Jr. on drums). He also began asking other acts to contribute. The Beach Boys‘ Wilson was the first to sign on, picking McCartney’s 1982 Tug of War track “Wanderlust.”

The 42-track set also includes the Who frontman Roger Daltrey’s “Helter Skelter,” Billy Joel‘s “Maybe I’m Amazed,” Chrissie Hynde‘s “Let It Be,” Ronnie Spector’s “P.S. I Love You,” Darlene Love‘s “All My Loving” and Peter Bjorn and John‘s “Put It There.” Below, via The Guardian, watch the Cure and Paul’s son James McCartney perform “Hello Goodbye.” (The Cure’s Robert Smith also recorded “C Moon” for the album.)

The collection is due out on November 18 in the United States (and a day earlier in the United Kingdom — see our article on a global release day) in a range of formats. Pre-orders are currently available on the project’s website and are also expected to be offered by Amazon and iTunes.
