The message went out at around 2 a.m.: “Late night load in, in suits, at Saint Vitus Bar, Greenpoint, Brooklyn #nirvana @ Saint Vitus Bar.” Which was Brooklyn Vegan’s way of saying that our favorite metal bar (capacity: maybe 250 people) was hosting an encore presentation of Nirvana’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance earlier in the evening. Drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and cleanup hitter Pat Smear had performed several guest-led highlights at the borough’s Barclays Center, including “Smells Like Teen Spirit with Joan Jett, “Lithium” with St. Vincent, “Aneurysm” with Kim Gordon, and “All Apologies” with Lorde.

Meanwhile R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe gave the group’s induction speech, saying, “I’m using artist and not musician because Nirvana were artists in every sense of the word … Nirvana captured lightning in a bottle … They spoke truth and a lot of people listened … That voice; that voice. Kurt, we miss you. I miss you.”

Not all of Nirvana’s new friends made it over to St. Vitus, but fans who caught the early morning show were treated to a 16-song-set featuring Jett, St. Vincent and Gordon along with J. Mascis and Deer Tick’s John McCauley (a.k.a. the frontman of the Nirvana tribute band Deervana). As for where Courtney Love was during all this, she ended her long-running feud with Grohl and Novoselic while accepting the band’s award onstage. Later she wrote, “If I skip the party, it’s just coz I’m tired. Love you guys in my crazy way.” And the hashtags that went along with that? “#hatchetburied #deepintheground.”
