Greetings! Top of the Morning is your daily AM news round-up. We paid attention over the weekend and gathered relevant tidbits to share over that first cup of coffee.
Last night Nicki Minaj hosted the MTV European Music Awards. In the middle of a song medley, Skylar Grey joined her on stage to perform a verse from the new track “Bed of Lies,” before Minaj launched into her hit single “Anaconda.” The host also took home the award for “Best Hip Hop Artist.”
BBC News reports that Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries was taken into custody early this morning after she allegedly attacked a flight attendant on an overseas trip from New York’s JFK to Shannon, County Clare. Once the flight had landed, O’Riordan may have also assaulted a police officer during questioning. She has now been hospitalized and remains in police custody.
Mark Ronson plans to release Uptown Special, his first album in over four years, on January 27. And he collaborated with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon to create lyrics for half the songs on the record, including tracks named “Daffodils,” “Crack in the Pearl” and “Leaving Las Feliz.” Although it seems like an odd pairing, Ronson penned Chabon a letter with a lyrics request after meeting him briefly at a party in New York, the producer stands by his decision; claiming it arose out of a desire to create more soulful lyrics than the ones he’s been finding recently on the charts. Ronson also told The Guardian about his admiration for Chabon and said, “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay was the first book that I can really say I didn’t want to ever end and when it did I was in tears. Since then, it’s been a book I’ve bought for everyone I love.” The album was co-produced by Jeff Bhasker and will also feature Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, singer Keyone Starr, Andrew Wyatt and Bruno Mars, who is on the album’s first single “Uptown Funk.”
Run the Jewels and Sun Kil Moon apparently shared neighboring stages at Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest over the weekend and El-P decided it was a good time to introduce himself to Mark Kozelek. (And give Kozelek a taste of his own medicine too.) The rap duo had their audience chant, “Suck my dick, Sun Kil Moon!” several times over. El-P still claimed to be a fan of the Sun Kil Moon records despite the good-natured taunting, but we’re sure that a new track from Kozelek will appear soon enough.
Rihanna stopped by the Miyake Mugler Ball in Astoria Queens with her hairstylist Yusef Williams and Olivier Rousteing (Creative Director of Balmain, no big deal) to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Once the singer was discovered, she was immediately called to the stage. Naturally RiRi quickly rose to the challenge and vogued like a master.
The following night Pharrell reunited N.E.R.D. on stage at Odd Future‘s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. Shay Haley and Chad Hugo joined Pharrell during his set to perform 2002′s “Rockstar.” Tyler, the Creator lost it and even admitted to crying when the group made their initial entrance.
Meanwhile, Mac DeMarco played the Fonda in L.A. last night and jumped backwards off the mezzanine into the crowd below.
