Sir Mix-A-Lot hadn’t seen anything yet. Earlier this month, Nicki Minaj released “Anaconda,” wherein the “Super Bass” royal goes “All About That Bass” all over familiar “Baby’s Got Back” samples. Our previous glimpse of her upcoming album The Pink Print, single “Pills n Potions,” merges the Young Money MC’s split personalities — pop pin-up and rapper’s rapper — by putting a druggy frame on a romantic ballad. “Anaconda” goes the full Nicki by showcasing some of her most feral rapping over a song that might not raise too many eyebrows at just about any polite wedding in the land.
The Colin Tilley-directed (Future, Lil Wayne) video, which Minaj has been teasing on Instagram, is just as proudly overstuffed. It goes from a sort of Amazon (not the website) dance party to product placements to, jarringly, Drake, whose presence in a chair for a fraught lap dance could be equivalent to the “Pills n Potions” clip‘s cameo by the Game.
