The full title for the new video from Land Observations is actually “On Leaving the Kingdom for the Well-Tempered Continent,” and both the song and its accompanying video bear that same sense of peaceful escape. The song itself is built on a simple, gentle four-note musical phrase that repeats for the duration. What makes it so moving is the way it builds from there a plucked guitar line, a few warm synth beds, the hint of a crescendo — all of these elements quietly appear and disappear, giving the song a kind of subtle depth. The video is just as deceptively simple: the visuals cycle through images of the outdoors — forests, oceans, cliffs — but in each scene, a hand holds a photo of the same location in front of the shot. Without saying a word, it suggests subtle ideas about image and reality, sign and signifier, truth and fiction. It’s as quiet and beautiful and evocative as the song it supports.
