Birthed out of minimalist punk group Tyler Jon Tyler, Negative Scanner are quickly making a name for themselves in their local underground scene and for good reason. The Chicagoan four-piece boasts a fuller, more well-rounded direction that reveals an impressive attention to detail. “Ambitious People” wastes no time getting to the point: Rebecca Valeriano-Flores’s stubborn yelp-singing hits you over the head with ferocity while layers of noisy guitars clamor together to add a texture that makes it stand out among post-punk bandwagoners. The result is a combination of Texas punks Video and early-’80s British alt-rock. “Ambitious People” is the grisly, snotty and brash without losing a sense of precision.
