The first official trailer for N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton emphasizes the gangsta-rap pioneers’ continued relevance before jumping to fittingly anarchic scenes of violence and nudity. Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, who both executive produced the film and are portrayed in it, drive through their old stomping grounds, commenting on similarities between the current era and their own latter-’80s rise. They also meet with younger Compton, California rappers the Game and Kendrick Lamar, who duly issue praise.
Former hip-hop mogul Suge Knight is currently facing a murder charge over a hit-and-run incident that came after he reportedly got into an altercation at Straight Outta Compton‘s on-location set. The film is still expected to go ahead on schedule, sources have said. Directed by F. Gary Gray, with stars Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell and O’Shea Jackson Jr., it’s set to open in theaters on August 14.
