As welcome as a new Missy Elliott album would be, she could probably keep churning out the occasional remix like this for quite a while without anyone getting too mad. The singer, songwriter, rapper and producer stole the show at last month’s record-setting Super Bowl halftime show, and she recently shared a photo of herself and longtime producer Timbaland working in the studio — perhaps on her first album since 2005′s The Cookbook and her ensuing Grave’s Disease-induced hiatus? For now, though, she has remixed “Take Ü There,” a dubstep-based pop song released by Diplo and Skrillex under their Jack Ü alias and featuring vocalist Kiesza.
The remix includes rapping from Missy herself, moving from nostalgia-capitalizing Salt-N-Pepa references to rapidfire, nimble-voiced wordplay about, naturally, naughty parts. She sings, too: “When I wake up, you say I look good” (Vulture rightly dreams of this becoming a new “I woke up like this”). Compile the “Work It”/”Get Ur Freak On” titan’s other appearances in recent years — on K-Pop giant G-Dragon’s “Niliria” in 2013, and on her own songs “Triple Threat” and “9th Inning” in 2012, for instance — and you’d be well on your way to, hey, a new Missy Elliott album. In the meantime, here’s to Misdemeanor jacking everybody else’s spotlight.
