Greetings! Top of the Morning is your daily AM news round-up. We paid attention overnight and gathered relevant tidbits to share over that first cup of coffee.
Can we all respectfully request that Mark Kozelek just shut up? What started off as a slightly amusing tirade has now morphed into a strange vendetta. Adam Granduciel, the frontman for the War on Drugs, finally responded to Kozelek’s strange taunts (including a track called “War on Drugs: Suck My Cock“) yesterday. Instead of just letting the whole fiasco blow over, Kozelek recorded himself reading Granduciel’s statements while he strummed his guitar and laughed. He titled it “Adam Granofsky Blues” and posted it on the Sun Kil Moon website. So now that Benji has been banished from our year-end lists and Kozelek has tarnished any remaining good will that was left, how well do you think his Christmas album will sell?
Lil BUB, the disfigured cat who captured the hearts of America and inspired a documentary, might be a guest on Meow the Jewels. According to Indy Week, Lil BUB’s owner Mike Bridavsky is in talks to have BUB featured on the brainchild of Run the Jewels’ El-P. In the meantime, El-P started auditioning other cats. But now that he’s headed out on a world tour, will this masterpiece be delayed? We can’t possibly live without it for much longer.
Last week, cartoonist David Rees brought us a whole album of Taylor Swift/Aphex Twin mash-ups. So we say, let the Swift mash-ups continue. Soundcloud user junesmoon took the music from the 1989 track “Out of the Woods” and remixed it with Beyoncé’s “XO.” Now, while putting Swift anywhere near Beyoncé would normally be considered an act of sacrilege, this is actually pretty good because Swift’s vocals aren’t on it. Have a listen.
Ariana Grande gave away Lorde’s secret. It turns out that the mysterious “Track 5” on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I soundtrack might be a collaboration between the two pop stars and Diplo. In a livestream for her fans earlier this week, Grande said that she’s excited to finally hear the finished product. She also revealed that she has an original, upcoming Christmas single prepped for release that is “sort of about being fed up with Santa because he doesn’t necessarily pull through all the time.” So no Santa hat to replace those cat ears then?
Who feels like going to beautiful Eau Claire, Wisconsin next July? Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon just received the last few permits to hold The Eaux Claires Music And Arts Festival on July 17-18, 2015. While the headliners have to be announced, Vernon is curating the festival line-up himself. Let’s all start a rumor that he’ll get Kanye to show up, so they can workout together in Vernon’s backyard.
Speaking of… have you ever asked yourself the important question, What Would Yeezus Wear? Two friends in San Francisco found that it was always on their minds, so they recreated Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s oft-photographed looks for their blog. Kathleen Lee and Katie Burroughs were discovered by US Weekly, and they’ve got Kimye’s poses down to a tee; even mimicking the couple’s facial expressions. Now all they need to do is borrow a friend’s baby and get “North West” in some of those shots.
