Lorde Releases “Yellow Flicker Beat” from ‘The Hunger Games’ Soundtrack

Lorde announced that she would be curating the soundtrack for the first installment of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 back in July. While we’ve yet to see the full track list (artists such as Patti Smith, Arcade Fire, The National, and The Weeknd have contributed to the past films), Lorde has been instagramming the lyrics to her first single throughout the month:

And today we’ve gotten a taste of what to expect on the upcoming soundtrack.

Lorde’s single, entitled “Yellow Flicker Beat,” focuses on the story line of Katniss Everdeen and her call to action from the mysterious District 13. The song is full of bold statements like, “Now I’m locking up everyone who ever laid a finger on me,” while the chorus contains lines such as, “They used to shout my name, now they whisper it,” marking the main character’s transition from public hero to reluctant anarchist threat and political adversary — The Mockingjay.
