On Zola Jesus’s last record, the bright, swirling Conatus, Nika Roza Danilova began moving cautiously toward the dance floor, trading the overcast, goth-informed moodiness of her previous work for songs that surged and pulsed. On “Dangerous Days,” the first single from her forthcoming Mute Records debut Taiga, that transformation is complete. Built on a flickering synth line that vaguely recalls Yaz’s “Only You,” the song casts Danilova in a role she plays well: the caring, empathetic ghost-mother, offering hope and encouragement in uncertain times.
