VEXX have been kicking up a ruckus in their home town of Olympia, Washington, for a year or so now, but I come to them thanks to London’s DIY champions Upset The Rhythm, who’ll be re-releasing their self-titled mini-album debut in October. By and large it’s demented, seat-of-the-pants hardcore that thumbs its nose at the Wipers and gets messy in the pit. They do other speeds, too though: See “Strength”, where the band pare it down to a raw, vicious blues, and vocalist Maryjane Dunphe sings herself a song of survival: “I carry mountains within my sides/And I have gold within my thighs”.
