A long way from the rough-and-tumble, smile-and-shamble sound that defined their earliest releases, The Vaselines circa 2014 are tough and toothy, fully earning the leather gear and motorcycle they don on the cover of the forthcoming V For Vaselines. What hasn’t changed is their knack for instantly indelible singalong refrains, the kind that bounce forward like runaway beach balls. “One Lost Year” is a big, gnarled guitar-pop song, one where a sunny melody conceals mental unsteadiness.
