A sometime flatmate of Iceage frontman Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, Birk Gjerlufsson is right at the centre of Copenhagen’s underground music community, but the music that he makes as Vanessa Amara is a reminder there’s more going on in this city than rawly expressive punk rock. New album Both Of Us/King Machine, forthcoming on Posh Isolation, is a selection of melancholic suites played on synthesizer, tape loops and the organ of a church in a remote coastal region of Sjælland. There are echoes of figures such as Yann Tiersen to be heard in Gjerlufsson’s blending of ancient instrumentation and experimental technique, but there’s a noise sensibility here too, evident as “King Machine 1″ slowly crumbles into looping distorion.
