If last year’s False Idols LP was a reminder that Tricky is not only still around but in the middle of making his most vital work in years, this summer’s Adrian Thaws album (due out September 8 through the singer/producer’s False Idols imprint) shifts gears once again. As suggested by such special guests as Mykki Blanco and grime MC Bella Gotti, the record is as close as Tricky gets to creating a hip-hop or dance record. In the case of its lead single “Nicotine Love,” that means his first house track, a spring-loaded beat cut with a soulful sample and the lead vocals of recurring collaborator Francesca Belmonte.

“Fran can take an influence and make it her own,” Tricky explains in a press release. “I’ve only heard my music a few times in a club but I grew up in clubs from when I was 14: blues parties, hip hop clubs, a few raves. I’m not known for doing club music but this album has some club tracks on it — well, what I would consider club music.”
