On their last album, 2011′s pitch-black Path of Tonality, Brooklyn metal band TOMBS delivered monolithic metal songs that loomed large and were as dense and threatening as storm clouds. By contrast, “Edge of Darkness,” from the forthcoming Savage Gold feels somewhat more direct. Its flurry of fanged chords and creeping tempo recalls the moodier moments of black metal contemporaries like Marduk. Some of that may have to do with the production; while Tonality was produced by John Congleton, who’s gone on to helm records by St. Vincent and Angel Olsen, Savage was produced by Morbid Angel’s Erik Rutan. The result is music that’s more visceral, and more pulverizing.
