Considering the label’s reputation as a haven for rave-on records, TOKiMONSTA never quite fit in at her short-lived home Ultra Music. First propelled onto the beat head scene via Flying Lotus’s Brainfeeder imprint, the LA producer’s roots are firmly planted in underground hip-hop, R&B and electronic music rather than anything remotely ‘EDM’. So it’s nice to see TOKiMONSTA not only break out of that mold, but launch her own label (Young Art) and upcoming mini-LP (Desiderium) with a subtle, sample-spliced ballad. Fronted by another one of the city’s rising artists, singer Anderson Paak (“the future btw,” according to TOKiMONSTA), “Realla” is a bold way of reestablishing one’s footing, grabbing our attention slowly but surely.
