Spectral Fangs’ “Memory Girl” opens on the sort of chiming guitars jury-rigged to set off a rush of specific associations: Teenage Fanclub, Big Star, The Pretenders, The Replacements, that sort of thing.  It’s a mid-tempo, aching moper, in other words, a downcast little murmur of a rock ballad that doesn’t necessarily sound like much on first pass but which reveals  layers of submerged prettiness on repeat listens. I can’t make out what the chorus is, but it seems to be saying “You were waitin’ on a memory, girl.” That’s enough for the song’s vague hurt to settle in; sometimes you don’t need to squint to hard to appreciate something.
