Sophie, “Lemonade”

Sophie has yet to meet an expectation he couldn’t playfully subvert. Yes, “he”: The U.K. producer has been remarkably cagey about biographical details, but the Sophie who performed at South by Southwest this year sure looked like a redheaded man. Last year’s airtight “Bipp” toyed hyperactively with both brightly colored ’80s dance-pop (which it channeled through a pitched-up “I can make you feel better” vocal hook) and contemporary electronic dance music’s obsession with the beat-drop (which it never satisfied). New single “Lemonade,” due out August 4 backed with B-side “Hard” via Numbers, appeared in that SXSW set and on a recent Cashmere Cat mix, and it’s another preconception-scrambler: The ready legibility of “Bipp” is absent at first, partly replaced with pops, squiggles and lurches evoking Hudson Mohawke and Lunice’s sadly-on-hiatus TNGHT project, but then just when that approach becomes familiar, in bursts a chirpy, jarringly direct chorus (“I’ve got something to tell you…”) that instantly explains why Sophie would be working with the likes of Japanese pop royal Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.
