On their third LP, Montreal rabblerousers Sonic Avenues caramel-coat their roaring punk rock with sugary hooks, making for an album that’s as brash and urgent as it is immediate and instantly-singable. Witness “Automatic,” a two-minute greaser romp that gets the full mileage out of the title’s three syllables, stretching it across a chorus that swoops and dips like a roller coaster. There are hints of ’50s pop in the “whoah-oh-oh”s and the same bright-eyed, clenched-teeth riffing as Bay Area stalwarts like Mikal Cronin. It’s pop music, operating at top speed.
