There’s a darkness that hangs over the music Oda Egjar Starheim and Øystein Monsen make as Soft as Snow. On the first track from their excellent, forthcoming debut EP, analog synths ripple and shine like the Aurora Borealis above the arctic, weird and remote. Starheim’s voice — which vaguely recalls Lykke Li but is sadder, gothier — snakes elegantly between the icy electronics, recalling both the tone and weird, retro-futurist glamour of early minimal wave. Theirs is a world covered in ice, populated by shadows.
